If you’re learning a language every day for several months/years and hope that one day you will be able to use it in a real situation, you’re doing the wrong thing.
Learning a language without using it is a waste of time!
When was the last time you had a conversation in your target language? If the answer is months or years ago or never, then I think you should find a better way.
One simple way that I often use is practicing speaking with a native teacher online.
I believe this is the best way to learn any language because of these 5 main reasons:
1. You get to practice using the language in a real conversation.
When you are speaking to a teacher, you have no way but to use the language. You learn to understand what the teacher is saying and how to respond to that.
The teacher will guide you through many topics to make sure that you can comfortably talk about your daily life, hobbies, work, study, travel, etc.
The most important thing is that you are now able to talk to a native speaker, you are using the language. That’s the ultimate goal of learning a language.
2. A teacher can help correct your mistakes.
When you practice speaking a language, you’re gonna make tons of mistakes, you don’t want those mistakes to become your habit, it’s better to fix those earlier in the learning process. Therefore, it’s crucial to have a native teacher who can remind you whenever you’re making a mistake and can advise on how to fix it.
Over time, you will sound more native and more confident in your speaking.
3. You can schedule and learn anytime, anywhere.
There will be no fixed schedule. You can book your lesson at your convenient time.
If you only have one free hour at 10 pm every night, you can book it because there is a teacher in another timezone who will be available to teach, your 10 pm may be their 8-9 am in the morning.
Besides, you don’t need to book all of your lessons in advance. You can try to book 1 or 2 lessons first, then upon finishing, you will schedule for the next one when you have free time. It is very flexible.
Another good point is that you don’t need to attend any classes. You can just stay at your comfortable home and study with a teacher using your computer. Basically, you can study from anywhere.
4. It’s not expensive.
Each one-hour lesson costs about 10-20 USD, depends on the teacher.
If you want to study once a week, that would be 40-80 USD a month.
For twice a week, it is 80-160 USD a month.
I think once or twice a week is enough for your speaking practice. The rest of the time can be spent on listening, reading and learning vocabs.
5. You can record the session and rewatch it as many times as you want.
Since you will talk to a teacher via Skype, there’s a way for you to record the whole session into a video. Then you can look back on that video to review your mistakes and try to fix them next time. You can also share the video with your friends and families so that they can learn from it too.
Learning languages is a long and challenging journey. I highly recommend you to find a teacher who can guide you through the process and help you achieve your learning goals. That will be more fun and effective.
In the next article, I will share about the How in more details. See you next time.
